When you decide to learn to drive, the first thing you need to do is apply for a provisional driving license. You must have passed your 17th birthday before you can start driving with a provisional license, but you can apply for one up to two months before this.

How to Apply

If you have a passport and a credit or debit card, you may be able to apply online. Or you can get a D1 application form from your local post office to complete and send to DVLA. You will also need to send the fee and proof of identity. If you are interested to know more, take a look at Driving Instructors Brisbane.

If you have a UK digital passport, you just supply the nine digit number so that the DVLA can check it and use your passport photo. Otherwise you need to include original documents proving your identity, plus a passport style colour photograph.

When you have received your license, and have passed your 17th birthday, you can drive with L plates on the car, as long as you are supervised by someone who has had a full UK driving license for over three years. And of course, you must be properly insured. The easiest way to comply is to take a course of lessons with an approved driving instructor. If you have an insured and L-plated car, and a willing and qualified driver to go with you, you might want to practise between lessons, once you have enough confidence and your instructor believes you are ready.
